Classic photo of Topsail Island Iconic Bumblebee Project towers.

This paritucal tower is number 3.  From 1946 to 1948, the United States began a program testing rockets to be used in modern jet propulsion, spacecraft, and missiles. The program, “Operation Bumblebee” was named because, like the missiles of the time, bumblebees should not be able to fly.

These towers are all still standing, and over the years most of them have been remodeled into homes or incorporated into larger structures.

This particular photo of bumblebee project tower 3 is one of my favorites.. The colors are vivid, the stormy skies add atmosphere, and the little blue boat in the foreground ties it all together.
